Generative AI changes the relationship between authorship, learning and assessment. The central question is no longer just whether AI can be detected. It is whether an assessment still measures the intended learning when powerful writing and coding tools are available to everyone.
Assessment design is moving towards process, context and evidence of learning. Drafting histories, oral follow-up, reflective commentaries, in-class elements, personal data, localised tasks, portfolios, practical demonstrations and staged submissions all make authorship more visible. Some assessments prohibit AI entirely; others allow limited use for brainstorming, editing or formatting; others require critical engagement with AI output. The integrity issue depends on the stated rules and the purpose of the task.
Sector guidance increasingly treats AI as an assessment design challenge, not just a detection problem. The Russell Group’s principles emphasise AI literacy, staff support, adapted assessment and academic rigour. TEQSA’s assessment reform guidance similarly frames generative AI as both a risk to learning assurance and a reason to rethink assessment for a digital environment. The strongest integrity models combine clear rules, meaningful assessment and transparent declarations of assistance.
